As Barack Obama has said many times, he believes that change comes not from the top-down, but from the bottom-up, and few are closer to the people than our churches, synagogues, temples, and mosques. And many of the challenges we face today—from saving our planet to ending poverty—are simply too big for government to solve alone. We need all hands on deck.

I don't know how I feel about this. In Bush's hands this program sounded really scary but I trust a Democrat to see that it is not a slippery slope. That fact is that the US already funds religion (through tax breaks) why not organize and get more of a benefit for our money.

As an Illinioan I hate to say this but Durbin has single handedly killed the Guantánamo protest movement. The protest's power was the righteous outrage we felt over what was being done in our name. Durbin took the protest's leadership when he expressed that outrage on the floor of the Senate. The speech gathered attention because it was over the top but that is where our level of outrage and action had to be if something was to change.

Durbin has wavered then fully retreated in the face of the Republican spin machine. Making the righteous outrage he expressed originally seem more political then moral. He has painted all Guantánamo protesters with the same brush.

Durbin laid the flag of protest against the Guantánamo prision on the ground. There is no one left to pick it up.
